Annotated Bibliography
Submit to your tutors by your week 4 tutorial
via email attachment as a word file and include in your stage
one Learning Portfolio an annotated bibliography of 5 recent
journal articles for your essay question. You will need to read the articles and then explain their relevance to the essay question. Please keep your
comments "short and sweet" - just a few lines on
each journal article explaining their relevance to the essay
question is adequate. Note you are more than welcome to change
your ideas on how you will answer the essay question between
the time you finish your Annotated Bibliography and submit
the essay.
An eg of an annotated bibliography
1. Cuthill, M.,2002. Exploratory research: Citizen participation,
local government and sustainable development in Australia,
Sustainable Development, 10(2): 79-89.
Based on his exploratory research , the author argues that
a collaborative relationship between community groups and
local government are important measures for sustainability.
It discusses current impediments to this process and suggests
further areas for research and development.
2. Gidding, R., Hopwood, W., and O’Brien, G.,2002.
Environment, economy and society: fitting them together into
sustainable development, Sustainable Development, 10(4): 87-196
The authors argue that environment, economy and society are
not three separate sectors which interconnect, but have a
much more complex , integrated relationship. They conclude
that a paradigm shift, with an interdisciplinary, integrated
approach needs to be taken when pursuing sustainability.
3. Hamilton, C.,1997. Ecological tax reform: Sustainability,
equity and growth, Tax Specialist, 1(1): 21-27.

and energy use) is an effective incentive towards sustainability,
and that it can be achieved with higher rates of economic
growth and employment, The implications for social equity
are also discussed.
4. Harris, G., 2002, Ensuring sustainability – paradigm
shifts and big hairy goals, National Business Bulletin, 12(5):
35-37
Dr Graham Harris, chairman of the CSIRO Flagship Program,
discusses the need for a paradigm shift in Australia in order
to pursue sustainability. He recommends taking an ecosystems
approach and raises questions on how to apply this to the
economy. This is a useful overview but lacking in detail.
5. Martin, P. and Woodhill, J.,1995. “Landcare in the
balance”: Government roles and policy issues in sustaining
rural environments. Australian Journal of Environmental Management,
2(3): 173-183
The authors describes the historical context of the changing
role of government in rural environments. There is discussion
of the problems of social equity, and the lack of transparency
and accountability in Landcare. The future role of government
in promoting sustainability is also discussed. This article
was published in 1995 and will need to be placed in context
of current developments.
