field trip preparation tutorial

Preparation Instructions

The first hour will be devoted to briefing students and preparing them for the Kioloa fieldtrip to take place during the teaching break. The second hour of the tutorial will focus on the essay draft to help ensure that students are on the right track with their research and thinking.

During the first hour of the tutorial, students will be asked to make a map of the Kioloa township which will be useful for making notes during the fieldtrip. A copy of these instructions will be made available to students in the tutorial so there is no need to print these out prior to attending the class:

1. use the supplied tracing paper and 1:25,000 maps to produce a map that your will use in the field -- make sure you include the boundaries of the ANU property -- they are on the 1:25,000 map
2. map the area from Murramarang Point in the north to our O'Hara Island in the South -- make sure you focus on the land not the sea -- you'll need to tilt your paper to maximise the amount of land on your map
3. read the legend on the 1:25,000 map to identify any key features on the map that give evidence of changing land use in area
4. put a scale and an indicator of north on your sketch map
5. use the four-page photocopied handout to decide which of the historic land allocations is the area now owned by the ANU
6. add on to your sketch map the historic tramlines -- hint map the tramlines in relation to the boundaries of what has become the ANU property
7. look at the large 1949 aerial photograph to see which of the features listed in your photocopied handout's "locality Map" notes are visible
8. go through all the available air photographs and indicate on your sketch map significant land use changes that have occurred
9. before the field trip photocopy a couple of copies of your sketch map so that you can annotate them as you walk around around the site

See above for instructions on what form your essay draft should take (as a minimum).

There is no preparation required for this tutorial, so you won't need to submit a one page preparation for this week, however you will be expected to reflect on the second hour of the tutorial - specifically on anything you learnt or noticed about each others essays, if you changed your argument etc.
